The most basic tool I use is listening and responding to the client.  Within that framework, I encourage clients to use metaphors, free association, location of feelings, and any other talking form that is helpful to them.  I encourage them to identify their feelings, to analyze cognitive patterns, to track down antecedents to behaviors, to try new behaviors, and to talk back to the internal judge.

     If a client wishes to engage in it, I provide methods for deep relaxation and visualization.  When it seems helpful, I invite the client to engage in role play, or to participate in empty chair work.  These techniques can be helpful with unfinished business.  They can also give clients a forum in which to practice new ways of interacting in situations they have previously found to be difficult.  If a client has a pronounced anxiety regarding a specific object, behavior or circumstance, I am able to assist that individual with the process of desensitization to what ever is causing the anxiety.

     Some clients find it helpful to express themselves through art or writing, at home or in the session.  Others find that they can enhance therapy through reading books or articles pertinent to their situation.  Some benefit by viewing films, others through physical activities, and others through such tools as meditation.  I aim toward tailoring each client's therapy to that individual.

     No matter how the specifics of therapy work out, I do my best to convey that it is the client who owns the process, sets the parameters on how deep s/he goes, and fashions the steps along the way.  I am strongly committed to sensitivity and competence regarding cultural, economic, ethnic, gender, orientation, and religious or non religious circumstances of all clients.  In matters of religion or cosmology, I always speak the client's language, and never attempt to convert anyone to any system of theism, agnosticism, or atheism.
